Share of time (screen time %) explained

Screen time % shows how much of a screen's rotation your campaign holds. What the number means, how it is calculated, and how it relates to plays and impressions.

What it measures

A JOLT screen runs a rotating loop of eight 8-second spots, so it plays 450 spots an hour. Your share of time is the share of those plays your campaign holds, averaged across the screens and hours in your plan. The wizard shows it as Screen time % in the advanced metrics panel.

  • At 15%, roughly one play in seven is yours.
  • At 100%, you are the only advertiser on the screen for your dayparts — a takeover.

How it is calculated

Share of time = plays your budget buys ÷ the screens' total play capacity over your flight.

Capacity is the number of screens × hours in your daypart × 450 plays an hour × days in the flight. Your plays come from your budget and CPM through the impressions forecast. See How impressions are forecast.

Why it matters

Share of time is the best single read on frequency. A person waiting at a charger or walking past a screen sees a loop or two; at 15% share of time they have a good chance of seeing you once, at 50% they will see you several times.

It also tells you whether a budget is realistic for a screen set. If your plan shows 2% screen time, the same money on fewer screens would give you far more presence per screen.

Changing it

Share of time rises when you:

  • increase budget on the same screens,
  • reduce screens by tightening locations or excluding screens,
  • narrow dayparts, since capacity is counted only in the hours you run.

It falls when you do the opposite. Because CPM is fixed per plan, under a binding budget the impressions you receive do not change when share of time changes — only how concentrated they are.
