Glossary: advertising terms used in JOLT Ads

Plain-English definitions of the terms you will meet in the planner and your reports: CPM, impressions, plays, share of time, dayparts, DMA and more.

Buying and pricing

  • CPM — cost per thousand impressions. The rate your campaign is priced at, in your market's currency. A CPM of 10.00 means 10.00 for every 1,000 impressions delivered.
  • Rate card — the base CPM and multipliers JOLT sets for a market, and optionally for a city within it.
  • Rate band — the range around your quoted CPM (about ±10%) that reflects how the rate can move as availability and lead time change before launch.
  • Budget-capped — a plan whose delivery is limited by budget rather than by the screens' capacity. The forecast tells you which applies.
  • Flight — the period a campaign runs, from start date to end date.
  • Always-on — a campaign with no end date; it runs until you pause it.

Delivery

  • Play (also spot) — one showing of your ad on one screen. JOLT screens play 8-second spots in a rotating loop.
  • Impression — one likely viewing of a play by one person. Each screen has an audience measure of how many people see a spot, so a play can count as more than one impression, or less.
  • Share of time (shown as Screen time %) — the share of a screen's available plays your campaign holds over the flight. At 100% you are the only advertiser on the screen. See Share of time explained.
  • Pacing — how delivery is spread across the flight: Even, or As fast as possible.
  • Daypart — the hours of the day your ad is allowed to play: All day, Rush hour, Business hours, Evenings or Custom.
  • Loop — the sequence of spots a screen cycles through. JOLT screens run a 64-second loop of eight 8-second spots.

Targeting

  • Location (also geo pin) — an address, suburb, city, metro or state you target, with a radius.
  • Radius — the distance around a location, in miles or kilometres, inside which screens are included.
  • Point of interest (POI) — a brand or category of venue (gyms, supermarkets, a competitor) you target near. Screens must be inside your location and near a POI.
  • DMA — Designated Market Area, the standard US metro definition used for US planning. Other markets use cities and regions.
  • Audience filter — a census-based filter on the neighborhoods around each screen: household income, age, families with children, education.
  • Venue — the physical site a screen is installed at: a supermarket car park, a retail center, a high-street charger.

Formats and process

  • DOOH — digital out-of-home: advertising on digital screens in public places. JOLT is a DOOH network.
  • OOH — out-of-home: all advertising seen outside the home, printed and digital.
  • Creative — the image or video that plays. JOLT creatives are portrait, 1080 × 1920 pixels.
  • Creative review — the JOLT team's check of every creative before it plays, usually under one business day.
  • Approval — the human check every campaign goes through before it can deliver.
  • Proof of delivery — the record of plays and impressions actually served, which your report and your invoice are built from.
  • AdCP — the Ad Context Protocol, an open standard that lets AI buying agents plan and book inventory. JOLT is an AdCP seller. See Buying with an AI agent.
